Why Women Need to Lift Weights, Even Later in Life!

Hello from your local female strength and conditioning coach!! Ladies, this one is for you!! If you’re in your 20’s keep reading, you’ll need this later AND if you are over the age of 30 ladies, guess what you are peri- or post-menopausal. And guess what, that’s ok, but it does make changes to our hormones and how our bodies respond to daily life. Strength training is crucial for women of all ages, but can be highly beneficial for peri-menopausal women in several ways (don’t worry, if you’re post-menopause it can help you too for the same reasons, so read on!):

  1. Improving Bone Health: During menopause, women experience a decline in
estrogen levels, which can result in a loss of bone density and an increased risk of
osteoporosis. Strength training, especially weight-bearing exercises, can help
build and maintain bone density and reduce the risk of fractures.
  2. Maintaining Muscle Mass: As women age, they tend to lose muscle mass, which
can lead to a decline in strength and mobility. Strength training can help preserve
muscle mass and improve overall strength, making daily tasks easier to perform.
AND get it out of your heads ladies, muscle DOES NOT mean bulk. You actually
have to train really hard to bulk. Strength training gives us the toned look we
want. So muscle mass equals toned. I promise!
  3. Reducing Body Fat: Menopause often leads to weight gain, especially in the
abdominal region. Strength training can help increase muscle mass, which can
boost metabolism and burn more calories throughout the day, leading to a
reduction in body fat everywhere in the body.
  4. Improving Mood and Energy: Strength training has been shown to increase
endorphins and other feel-good hormones, which can help alleviate symptoms of
depression and anxiety. Additionally, regular exercise can improve energy levels
    and overall well-being.
  5. Regulating Hormones: Strength training has been shown to increase levels of
growth hormone and testosterone, which can help regulate other hormones in
the body, such as estrogen and cortisol. This can lead to a reduction in symptoms
of menopause, such as hot flashes and mood swings AND help with achieving
    weight loss.

Overall, strength training can be highly beneficial for peri-menopausal women, improving bone health, maintaining muscle mass, reducing body fat, improving mood and energy, and regulating hormones.
